After preparing the new spaces we have begun to receive and kit out the new laboratories. This week a brand new 21 cylinder gas manifold for the molten salt laboratory (Phase 2) and the new benches for the analytical laboratory (Phase 3) were fitted. The expansion will take place over three phases with the primary goals of developing and expanding the groups molten salt and analytical capabilities.

Phase (2) - Gas Manifold

With the basic utilities (Electricity, Ventilation, & Water) being fitted last week we are now awaiting delivery of the gloveboxes. In preparation a new gas manifold was installed. The manifold can hold up to 21 cylinders, with 15 of them supplying the necessary gas requirements at any one time. Despite the tough requirement and limited space available the new manifold was fitted successfully.

Phase (3) - Workbenches

Along with the installation of the new gas manifold in the main molten salt laboratory, progress has also been made in the analytical laboratory. New benches have been in stalled in a 5/4 arrangement. The larger 150 x 100 tables will be where the new analytical equipment will be located (microscope, UV-vis, SEM-EDS etc) while a central row will house all the support items as well as provide the necessary preparation space. In addition, a salt purification apparatus will support the molten salt team.
